A wardrobe is the workhorse of any bedroom, and the first decision is almost always the same: sliding doors or hinged doors? Both look great and store plenty. The right choice depends on your room, your budget and how you like to use your wardrobe. Here is a clear guide.

Sliding vs hinged: the quick comparison

Space

Sliding doors move along the wardrobe, so they need no clearance in front, perfect for compact bedrooms or where a bed or furniture sits close by. Hinged doors swing open, so they need free space in front, but they let you see and reach the entire wardrobe at once.

Access and storage

Hinged wardrobes give full access to every shelf and can fit more internal accessories door-to-door. Sliding wardrobes only ever open one section at a time, which some people find slightly less convenient but very neat.

Cost

Sliding systems use heavier tracks and larger shutters, so they usually cost a little more than an equivalent hinged wardrobe. Hinged wardrobes tend to be the more budget-friendly starting point.

Look

Sliding doors give a clean, seamless, contemporary wall of storage. Hinged doors offer more design variety, with handles, profiles and mixed finishes, for a classic or bespoke look.

Plan the inside, not just the doors

The real value of a wardrobe is the internal layout: hanging sections for long and short clothes, drawers for folded wear, shelves, a locker for valuables and a loft for luggage. Planning the inside around your actual belongings is what makes a wardrobe genuinely useful.

Materials and finish

A moisture-resistant carcass keeps the wardrobe solid in humid weather, while the shutter finish, whether laminate, acrylic or a woodgrain, sets the look and the price. Factory-pressed laminates and clean edge banding give a finish that lasts.

Which should you choose?

Choose sliding for small or busy bedrooms and a minimal look; choose hinged for full access, more internal fittings and a tighter budget. In many homes, a mix across rooms works best.
